The Magic is happening more and more often. This time it was a chance meeting at Kirstenbosch gardens between Freshly Ground founder member Aron Turest- Swartz, and owner of Mama Dance, Craig McGahey, who’s had a close relationship with the band over the past 10 years.
Aron had the great news that he had hooked up with fellow composer producer Mr Mallum to form a composition team called Ripple Effect.
Mr Mallum who had started his career working on remixes and albums for Mama Dance artists like KB and Jerusha has since produced numerous SAMA award nominated and award winning acts such as Lloyd Jansen, Keeno Lee, Byron Clark and Chad Saaiman and is currently working with Loyiso, Danny K and involved in the Triggerfish production “Khumba”
Says Craig “It was great to connect with these two super talents again and I set up a meeting at their Newlands studios as soon as I could. I updated them on where Mama Dance was now at. We chatted about possibilities of working together again. When I mentioned that we were planning a “Happy Go lucky” African whistling production music album, Arons eyes lit up and he said “I LOVE whistling!” Six weeks later we released an exceptionally catchy, fun and quirky album by the duo and we have absolutely no doubt it will have mega success in advertising and TV programming – it’s VERY infectious and uplifting!”
The thirteen track album titled “Happy Xolaki – Afro Whistle Mania” has commercial 30 second cut downs of all tracks with and without whistling as well as extended versions perfect for TV, Film and Doccie usage.
You can listen and download the album directly here or request a hard drive with all latest updates from nine SA and international Mama Dance libraries.

Cape Town based composer, Nic Paton, has released his 5th album on the popular home-grown Mama Dance ! Music Library.
The latest album, called Pianism, has been described as “Elegant, minimal, flowing piano themes to create space, style and expansiveness, to calm and cleanse, to uplift and affirm, yet hinting at deeper, darker wells of emotion and intrigue.”
“Over the past few years we received many requests from our clients for sparse, but very moving, piano pieces – so we learnt quickly that less is very often more!” says Craig McGahey, director of Mama Dance. “Luckily Nic must have come to the same conclusion because he arrived to a listening session with the most beautiful selection of piano compositions.”
Says Nic, “About 18 months ago I just found myself very drawn to our piano, which we inherited. It’s a Grotrian Steinweg, and just a lot of pianistic music started coming out. I’m quite a good librarian. If I come up with an idea I’ll put it onto an MP3 recorder, make sure that I keep it and then come and put it into digital format and then work on it. In one sense, I follow the muse and all I can say is that at a particular time, the muse took me to the piano.”
Nic’s previous four albums have all been very well received by Mama Dance clients. Wilderness Within and Space & Story cover many of the bases for emotional programming and advertising and have scored a huge amount of usages both in South Africa and overseas through a distribution deal with Sonoton. His tracks on the energetic Sports Power and quirky kiddie’s album Twana Toons further show off his talents as a prolific composer, well-skilled in a variety of moods and styles.
The success of the Pianism has been immediate with an all Africa usage by HIV awareness NGO the Egmont Trust and very impressive download stats from the Mama Dance music search website in just a few weeks since its release.
The album can be streamed and downloaded at our site or give the team at Mama Dance a shout and they will organise a hard drive with all of the Mama Dance libraries for you.
Freshly Ground founder member Aron Turest- Swartz and star producer Mr Mallum deliver an extremely smiley, warm and quirky album with plenty of care free whistling, very infectious fun South African melodies and grooves PERFECT for advertising and TV – HAPPY GO LUCKY!

Mama Dance continues to cherry pick the finest new production music labels from around the world. Its latest signing is UK based In-spired production music, a very high quality, fresh and sophisticated library set up by renowned producer Tim Geraghty in 2006.
Tim’s experience includes a decade at BMG where he played a key role creating music for the wildly popular ‘Atmosphere’ catalogue.
“When we first heard this library, we were completely blown away by its fresh innovative sound – we realised that these guys knew what they were doing and that we HAD to offer this catalogue to our many South African clients. The response so far has been phenomenal with plenty of directors and mix guys saying it’s the best library they’ve ever heard” says Craig McGahey
The library currently stands at 43 albums, all very well organised and consistently mixed and mastered. Styles range from classy acoustic and classical right through to studio shaking but intelligent bass heavy dubstep.
“We do daily free production music searches for our media clients and for our own sanity we are being very picky about which international libraries we bring into the country. We have to spend many many hours listening to them!! It’s honestly a pleasure to listen through In-spired – it’s easy on our ears and satisfies our very discerning customers!!” says Mama Dance music guru Jeff Moffat
Another recent Mama Dance library signing is US based Atomica, which has been extremely successful over the past year and has now grown quickly to over 259 albums, with new releases monthly.
“We are only interested in libraries that are regularly releasing fresh and exceptional material that is consistently well produced and emotionally moving. We’re a very fast growing library music distributer, but we’ll never sacrifice quantity over quality. We know and love good music!” says Craig McGahey
Mama Dance ! Music for Africa libraries currently contain over 40 000 tracks from nine South African and international libraries and are available at www.mamadance.com or by request on hard drive.
The company also offers free music searches, music supervision and original composition.
